Mission statement
The Center for Research In Syntax, Semantics and Phonology
The Center for Research In Syntax, Semantics and Phonology (CRISSP) is intended as a platform for cooperation between formal linguists working or living in Belgium. It aims to do so by organizing the following events:
- a yearly international conference (the Brussels Conference on Generative Linguistics or BCGL);
- a two-yearly conference on natural logic;
- informal meetings where members can present their work or discuss that of others;
- a lecture series at which speakers from other universities are invited to come and give talks in Brussels;
- in the slightly longer run, the publication of working papers in which the members can publish their work in progress.
In this way, CRISSP hopes to build and expand a network of formal linguists in Belgium, creating an ideal atmosphere for intensive collaboration and research, as well as grounding this type of linguistics more solidly into the Belgian academic scene.
The current members of CRISSP focus on syntax, semantics and logic, but they actively welcome researchers working on morphology, phonology, language acquisition, or related domains such as language processing, computer science or cognitive science. CRISSP membership is free and it is open to anyone who supports its objectives.
CRISSP was founded in March 2006 by a group of linguists working at the Catholic University of Brussels and the Vlekho campus of the Arts and Sciences College in Brussels, but it continues a long tradition of research in formal linguistics in Brussels. It can be considered a follow-up to CODOC (Contact and documentation center for linguistics in Brussels), which was founded in the seventies at the Catholic University of Brussels.
